boosting sustainability & efficiency with waste balers

At Aalberts integrated piping systems, we do not see waste. We see resources in the wrong place. We focus on keeping materials in use for as long as possible, and putting by-products back into the right loop. This supports our wider aim to reduce scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030.

One of the ways we track progress internally is through our Waste KPI, which measures kilograms of waste disposed per million in revenue. In 2025, over 90% of our waste was recycled or treated via energy recovery, helping keep materials out of landfill.

why metals support circularity

Because much of what we manufacture is metal, we can keep high-value materials in use. Metals such as copper and brass can be recycled repeatedly without losing key properties. Recycling also typically comes with a much lower carbon footprint than primary production because it requires far less energy. International Copper Association cites that recycled copper requires around 85% less energy than primary production1.

Several of our sites also maintain direct relationships with brass melters, enabling brass swarf (fine shavings from machining) and scrap to go straight back into remelt.

our approach: reduce, rethink, recycle

  • reduce: design lighter products and minimise packaging to lower material intensity.
  • rethink: challenge standard practices and find smarter uses for offcuts and by-products.
  • recycle: sort at the source to keep secondary materials clean and high value.

making recycling easier through baling

To cut transport impacts and improve material quality, we invested in onsite processing such as cardboard and clear plastic balers. Compacting loose materials into dense bales reduces the number of shipments and helps ensure these streams are ready for high-quality recycling.

This is ongoing work. We keep investing in better segregation, stronger closed-loop partnerships, and practical design changes that prevent waste in the first place.
