BCIA

The Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) is the leading voice for organisations operating in the building controls and building energy management systems (BEMS) sector. With more than 200 member companies representing manufacturers, systems integrators, technology specialists, and wider supply-chain partners, the Association brings together the UK’s most innovative and influential businesses in the space. Collectively, BCIA members account for over 75% of the UK building controls and BEMS market – a sector worth in excess of £850 million annually and fundamental to delivering efficient, safe, reliable and sustainable buildings. From optimising energy performance to improving occupant experience and driving net-zero ambitions, building controls sit at the core of a modern, intelligent built environment.

In 2026, the BCIA will mark its 35th anniversary. Formed in 2004 through the merger of two long-standing bodies, the Association has continually evolved alongside a fast-moving technology landscape – one driven by automation, advanced controls, data analytics, artificial intelligence and smart building solutions.
Today, the BCIA is recognised as the authoritative trade association for BEMS in the UK, trusted by industry, education partners, and the wider built-environment community.

What We Do

In collaboration with members, the BCIA has established five strategic priorities that reflect the importance of building controls in energy management, digital transformation and building performance across commercial, public-sector and multi-unit residential buildings.

Our current strategic objectives are to:

  1. Ensure that the Building Controls Industry is regarded as a high-value career of choice, supporting talent attraction and retention.
  2. For the Association and its members to be collectively recognised as a trusted and expert voice within the political and policymaking space, and to place building controls at the heart of policy discussions.
  3. Build a solid understanding of what Building Controls and Building Management Systems are and the value they add to delivering efficient buildings.
  4. Add value to members and deliver a building controls network that enables and encourages collaboration, knowledge share and drives innovation.
  5. Be a relevant association serving its members and the industry.

How We Deliver Our Mission

To support these priorities, the BCIA drives a wide range of initiatives that strengthen industry capability, elevate professional standards, and help shape the future of the sector:

  • Industry Standards & Best Practice – sharing technical guidance, insights and updates to support high-quality design, commissioning, operation and management.
  • Innovation & Technology Leadership – driving research, collaboration and adoption of new solutions shaping the future of smart buildings.
  • Skills Development – delivering accredited training, qualifications, apprenticeships and CPD to build a skilled and future-ready workforce.
  • Industry Representation – engaging with government, regulators and standards bodies to ensure building controls are recognised as central to energy performance, net-zero delivery and digital transformation.
  • Community and Collaboration – running events, working groups, forums and networking platforms to share knowledge, build partnerships and drive improvement.

Specialist member working groups focus on technical standards, apprenticeships, training and early-career development, including the Young Engineers initiative. The BCIA’s direction and governance are led by an elected Management Committee drawn from across the membership.

Skills, Standards and Recognition

Supporting people and capability is central to the BCIA’s mission. The Association played a leading role in developing the BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship, providing a dedicated pathway for new entrants, while the Experienced Worker Assessment helps professionals validate and develop their skills.

The BCIA delivers accredited training aligned with technological progress, regulatory change and workplace needs, ensuring professionals at every stage of their career can grow and succeed.

Each year, the BCIA Awards celebrate excellence in innovation, technical delivery, sustainability and talent development, showcasing the organisations and individuals shaping the sector’s future.
